We are gathered here to day to recognize the passing of a once loved, Ophelia. it was her status quote in society that earned her this proper burial. In the end she was no better than a murderer for taking her own life and sucking the life out of others with the required amount of attention she needed. Her madness was caused by her undying love for hamlet who had now murdered her father. She felt like a trader for loving Hamlet yet betrayed by Hamlet who killed her father. The guilt of this series of events lead to the collapse of the once sane Ophelia.
Although unfortunate her demise was no fault but her own. Things happen, good and bad, but as you grow older your capability with dealing with things should increase. Poor Ophelia couldn't get a grasp on her own emotions therefore I refuse to sympathize for her because she allowed them to get the best of her. Although I am not in her position I would have restricted my emotions for my survival. Even though its upsetting I do not feel bad for her because her passing could have been prevented, she just took the easy way out. She will be loved and missed but the castle is relieved to have lifted a burden from off its shoulders.
Shakespeare's portrayal make Ophelia come off as completely bonkers but innocent. She's walking around singing her own tunes and playing with flowers. Yes this is unnatural for someone of her age and class but her actions are that of a child as she turns insane. I don't think she committed suicide even though she was depressed and mentally insane but I also don't think Gertrude pushed her in. Although a lot of people in the play are awful human beings I don't see why Gertrude would have the desire to kill Ophelia. I think she simply just drowned in the water under the weight of her dress.
After reading your eulogy, I have to say that I somewhat disagree about her reasons for spiraling into her own madness. I wouldn't say that she felt like a traitor to anyone considering they were trying to push to be with Hamlet in order to figure out the reason for his madness, but to each there own. I would however have to agree that it could have been caused more by Hamlet killing her father. Hamlet was her true love and I feel as if she could not get over his betrayal. As for how she died, I completely agree with saying that Gertrude had nothing to do with Ophelia's death. Though we have some different views, I have to say you did a great job with your eulogy.
ReplyDeleteI am interested on how you think ophelia died then. I am kind of curious on how you would get over this if you were in her place. She faced a whole lot of pain and then put it all on herself. Could you live through that pain?
